Types of Table & Floor Lamps

A lamp collection is really two collections. Table lamps and floor lamps serve overlapping but different roles in a room, and the sizing rules for each are different.

Table Lamps

Bedside & Bedroom Lamps

How to Choose the Right Table Lamp

Height rule. The combined height of your side or end table plus the lamp should equal 58–64 inches from the floor. This puts the shade at seated eye level and controls glare.

Table lamp height vs table height. A table lamp should be no more than 1.25 to 1.5 times the height of the table it sits on. A 24" nightstand can carry a 30–36" lamp comfortably.

Base width. The lamp base should occupy no more than one-third of the tabletop surface. A wider base overpowers the table; a narrow base looks lost.

Shade width. For a balanced silhouette, the shade width should be within about 2 inches of the lamp base height. A 14" tall base pairs with a 12–16" wide shade.
